Alexandra Baker was born in Boston and raised in Memphis, Tennessee. After spending time in Italy and San Diego, she has returned to her roots and creates art in Downtown, Memphis.
Having taken art classes as a child, she approaches the canvas as an adult with a different intention than one she was taught – one of healing. A Divine Pressure drives her to paint and create works of art whose primary purpose is to heal. Healing through color and texture is the artists primary objective in creating and sharing the works. May we heal together as a community!
Alexandra answered some questions about her series:
How did you get your start making art?
When I was 27 I started feeling a Divine pressure to paint (I'm now 33). It felt as if God might whoop me if I didn't paint. I didn't "know how to paint" and I "didn't have the money for materials" but one day there was a big sale at Blicks near my apartment in San Diego and I went all in - I bought five 48 x 48 inch canvases and a ton of paint. My first painting was variations of yellow and white but I was SO proud. I've done a lot of things in my life, but starting to paint required the most courage. I found healing in painting, and Spirit has been guiding my creations ever since!
What inspires you to create?
My biggest inspiration to paint are my emotions. I feel really big and painting is the best way I know to let it all out. I know my piece is successful when it's honest. Knowing there's always more layers to unravel in terms of my healing compels me to keep going.
What do you want people to take away from your artwork?
When I paint I'm healing myself, and when I share my work with others I pray it stimulates healing in them. Healing Thru Color and healing as a community!
Alexandra began painting in 2018 and has had her work published in 3 editions of British Vogue, 3 editions of Vanity Fair London, Suboart Magazine, as well as selected for the "Best of Dallas" 2022 from The Other Art Fair. Showing in galleries from San Diego to Manhattan, recently, she has shown and sold works through The Dixon Museum.
Her art will be on display and available to purchase for the month of June. Any of her paintings can become a Fine Art Print, Canvas Print, Puzzle, T-shirt, Card or Coffee Mug by request.
