At this very moment, the world has stopped, and everyone is quarantined to their homes. Confession time- I am not particularly saddened about not being able to socialize with others, I am more upset that no one will be able to see all these fire outfits hanging in my closet. Also, I cannot take another day of wearing pajamas or sweatpants, so I have begun to get dressed just for the sake of it.
Children’s bath time- Getting dressed in my favorite beach outfit.
Dinnertime- Black Tie
…and so on.
If you too are over this frumpy state of fashion, then here is my top list of the most fashionable films that will leave you wanting to play dress up.
- Sex And the City (1 +2)
Duh! If the series wasn’t enough, they gave us films. The storylines and character development was good but we really drooled over all the fashion moments throughout both films. With Carrie living every fashionista’s dream, Charlotte owning the Mom Style, Samantha giving us the glamour and there is Miranda. Remember the Vivienne Westwood wedding photoshoot or when Carrie is running the streets of NYC in her signature fur to be with a very emotional Miranda? What about when the ladies took their talents to Dubai? Every bit of that film was a moment.
- Queen & Slim
The aesthetic of this film is unmatched. Although the main characters, Queen & Slim, wore the same outfit throughout the movie, it is who they encountered during their journey. The fashion is so full of heat, vibrancy and sex appeal. The film’s styling was heavily influenced by hip-hop and the costume designer mentioned to have been inspired by a book, Back in the Days. Queen’s outfit alone is enough, but Uncle Earl and his custom Dapper Dan look with his girls turned up the heat.
- What’s Love Got to Do with It
Covering a few different decades from the 60’s to the 80’s, the fashion was just as stellar as Angela Basset’s performance of Tina Turner. Classic style from mod to rock & roll, this film delivered. How can we forget the classic white Yves Saint Laurent suit that Angela wore during the limo fight scene and running across the highway, leaving Laurence Fishburne behind at the hotel?
- Clueless
As If Cher and Dionne would be left off this list, talk about a 90s fashion phenomenon. Anyone can spot a Clueless inspired plaid two-piece suit anywhere. The yellow plaid suit with knee-highs is unforgettable. It is said that the costume designer styled the cast in over 53 different plaids.
- Crazy Rich Asians
The fashion was richer than the characters in the film. Valentino. Ellie Saab. Alexander McQueen. Christian Dior. Gemma Chan is gold. Awkwafina’s style was pure magic. Just like her character, her style was very much exaggerated and possibly my favorite. Awkwafina brought the street style to balance the rest of the cast’s elegant and high-fashion style.
- Boomerang
Grace Jones. Halle Berry. Robin Givens. Eddie Murphy. Eartha Kitt. A star-studded cast with star-studded style. Boomerang is filled with glamour and notable 90s looks. How could we forget our beloved Pops (John Witherspoon) and his mushroom suit that he wore to Thanksgiving dinner? Or Halle’s artistic style or Eartha in lingerie? The avant-garde looks of Grace. Executives looks for Eddie. There were so many style directions and they were all executed perfectly. A classic.
- The Devil Wears Prada
You did not think I would forget the fashion film of all fashion films, did you? Miranda and her many coats and bags. If this film has taught you anything, it’s all about the accessories, people! Everything about this movie was high fashion, even the story line.
- Paris is Burning
“And the category is…” Although this film is a documentary, the street style featured is fire. This film details the lives of a few in the LGBTQ+ community in New York City in the 80-90s. It’s all about the Balls and the fashion houses but you don’t want to miss what they’re wearing off duty. A ballroom scene inspired Madonna’s Vogue.
